Taiwan-China investment protection pact will offer Taiwanese investors in China multiple channels for settling disputes.

Taiwan's trade promotion body expressed optimism regarding the Taiwan-China investment protection act that is to be signed into effect Thursday. The pact, according to Wang Chih-kang the chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, is expected to provide Taiwanese investors with extensive protections. The pact is highly awaited by Taiwan, as China is Taiwan's largest trade and investment partner.

China and Taiwan expect to reach an accord regarding the long-stalled investment protection pact. The pact aims at providing greater protection to Taiwanese businessmen operating in China. The pact also seeks to expedite the customs clearance process and crack down on smuggling.
China is being represented by Chen Yunlin, president of the Beijing-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS). Taiwan is represented by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). The SEF and ARATS are responsible for cross-strait engagements in the absence of formal diplomatic ties. The SEF and ARATS have engaged in talks concerning the cross-strait protection pact since 2008. Discussions have been stalled numerous times due to certain provisions in the agreement that touch on sensitive sovereignty issues.
